HISTORY

With every step you take in the "Bären" you will encounter history: Many of the over 50 landlords through-out time have altered the building to suit their needs and to meet the changing demands of their guests. The house that our guests stay in today was originally built by Andreas Pflug in 1718. It was carefully re-done with a sure instinct for the history of the location 260 years later, from 1978 to 1989, by the landlords Monika and Peter Hansen. During the renovation, elements of the historical building, reaching as far back to the time of the founding of Freiburg, were discovered. he title “Germany’s oldest restaurant and inn” was introduced by the host Family Riedmüller in 1922 after the sensational discovery of a document dated 1387!

hanks to the researches of one of chroniclers of Freiburg, it was proven that “zum Roten Bären” is constantly being used as a restaurant and inn from medieval times up to the present day. So far no other restaurant and inn in Germany was able to prove the same.
